Met Opera performs work by a Black composer for the 1st time Los Angeles Times

Legendary soprano Kathleen Battle returns to the Met stage on May 12 at 5PM for a special performance of classical song and favorite spirituals. Harpist Bridget Kibbey and guitarist Chico Pinheiro join Battle for this one-night-only event. Please note that video cameras will be in operation during the May 7 and May 11 performances as part of the Met’s Live in HD series of cinema transmissions.

Since the summer of 2006, Peter Gelb has been the Met’s general manager—the 16th in company history. Under his leadership, the Met has elevated its theatrical standards by significantly increasing the number of new productions, staged by the most imaginative directors working in theater and opera, and has launched a series of initiatives to broaden its reach internationally. These efforts to win new audiences prominently include the successful Live in HD series of high-definition performance transmissions to movie theaters around the world. To revitalize its repertoire, the Met regularly presents modern masterpieces alongside the classics.

Conried was followed by Giulio Gatti-Casazza, who held a 27-year tenure from 1908 to 1935. Timeline

Beginning in 1898, the Metropolitan Opera company of singers and musicians undertook a six-week tour of American cities following its season in New York. These annual spring tours brought the company and its stars to cities throughout the U.S., most of which had no opera company of their own. The operas in the Met's repertoire consist of a wide range of works, from 18th-century Baroque and 19th-century Bel canto to the Minimalism of the late 20th and 21st centuries.[5] These operas are presented in staged productions that range in style from those with elaborate traditional decors to others that feature modern conceptual designs.

In Canada the live broadcasts have been heard since December 1933 first on the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission[93] and, since 1934, on its successor, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation where they are currently heard on CBC Music. To further engage new audiences Gelb initiated live high-definition video transmissions to cinemas worldwide, and regular live satellite radio broadcasts on the Met's own SiriusXM radio channel. Hänsel und Gretel was the first complete opera broadcast from the Met on Christmas Day 1931. Regular Saturday afternoon live broadcasts quickly made the Met a permanent presence in communities throughout the United States and Canada.
